Sandy Springs recently announced its inaugural call for ArtSS in the Open, which is a competition for artists from the local area, as well as across the nation, who would like to submit their work for consideration to be included in an outdoor exhibit at City Springs.
City Springs is a development in the Sandy Springs downtown, comprising green space, residential units, retail spaces, a performing arts center, and civic facilities. The development was undertaken when residents and city officials agreed their community needed a new cultural and civic center.
Rusty Paul, the mayor of Sandy Springs, said City Springs was created in part to provide access to the arts, and it has become a creative area where everyone from members of community theatre, to famous artists perform. He added that bringing visual art to the development is exciting, and adds to the collection of public art the city already enjoys. Officials who are responsible for collections like this can use brochure printing to create Booklets that show where the sculptures are located.
The competition's theme is ‘Inspired. By nature’. For this inaugural exhibit, nine of the sculpture will be placed on display around the City Green, and Sandy Springs plans to buy one sculpture, or perhaps more, from the competition each year. Sculptures that the city acquires in this way will be on permanent display around the city.
