Last Tuesday, May 23, Rusty Paul, the major of Sandy Springs, announced Daniel W. Lee’s selection as the community's next city attorney.

He succeeds Wendell Willard, who was instrumental in founding Sandy Springs, and who is the only person to hold the city attorney's position—until now.

Lee is a partner in the Freeman Mathis & Gary, LLP, law firm. He has over 25 years' experience, with specialization in the areas of professional liability and governmental law. He has served as a county attorney, at which time he represented more than 30 of Georgia's cities and counties. He also served three terms in the Georgia State Senate.

Although the position of city attorney is made by appointment, Mayor Paul asked interested law firms to disclose how they would manage the city's legal work, and six firms submitted proposals. Paul talked with a number of individuals about the appointment, including the city attorney, the city manager, and local attorneys, but in the end, the decision was his. Paul says that after meeting various stakeholders and the interested firms, he settled on Lee as the best to follow in Willard's footsteps.

Willard and Lee will work together for the next few months to insure a smooth change.
