Sandy Springs enhances fire safety measures

On December 6, 2016, the city council in Sandy Springs voted unanimously to update ordinances to increase fire safety.

The changes will impact mostly on older apartment buildings, which have been the site of an increasing number of structure fires in recent years, according to Fire Chief Keith Sanders.

The updated ordinances mandate fire suppression devices in kitchens, fire extinguishers in every unit, and the use of intumescent paint in specific areas. Intumescent paint expands when it is exposed to heat and becomes less dense, making it an insulator that keeps high temperatures from reaching the area coated by the paint. The ordinance requires this type of paint be used on interior wood that is unprotected and exposed, or on plywood or studs. It is also to be used in attics if there is no sprinkler system in place.

Additionally, all gated communities are now required to have a KNOX entry system. This system allows emergency responders to enter the complex when residents are unable to let them in. The new ordinances also require communities with private fire hydrants to have them inspected annually by a certified inspector. The inspector will have to provide verification of the inspection to the city before it will renew a business license.

Chief Sanders said all apartment communities will be contacted to ensure they know about the changes, and to answer any questions.
