Recently, the Sandy Springs City Council gave the green light to a design contract for a bicycling/walking trail that would link the city to the Buckhead area of Atlanta. The city would pay $416,256 for the contract.
The trail would be designed by Health & Lineback Engineers Inc., which is the company that designed PATH400 – the designation of the Buckhead part of the trail. However, before work can start, the contract for the Ga. 400 Multiuse Trail Extension, as the project is called, must be reviewed and approved by the city’s finance and legal departments.
The Sandy Springs part of the trail would be 2.1 miles long, and run between the Glenridge Connector to PATH400 at Loridans Drive. When complete, the path will be a part of the reconstruction of the I-285/Georgia 400 interchange, which the Georgia Department of Transportation is rebuilding.
Funding for the design is split between federal and local funds, with the federal money amounting to $640,000, and the local government contributing 20%, or approximately $83,000. The latter amount will be supplied by the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, which was passed recently.
