Four charging stations for electric vehicles, which were installed at Hammond Park in Sandy Springs last year, have proven to be in great demand, with more than 2,500 uses recorded over the past year.
In total, the stations were used 2,536 times between March 1, 2015 and February 29, 2016
The stations were installed by Sandy Springs as part of a state effort – the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority (GEFA) Charge Georgia grant program. The Sandy Springs stations got the most use of any cities that received grants, according to the GEFA.
According to Rusty Paul, Sandy Springs' Mayor, when it comes to saving the environment, little things add up. He noted that placing the stations in Hammond Park gave electric vehicle drivers a central spot where they could plug in their cars, while at the same time it provided a beautiful setting where the drivers could also recharge.
Comments from users say they like both the park and the free charging services. At Hammond Park, a driver can charge his or her vehicle for four hours for free; after that, the parking charge is $5 per hour. The stations are operational on weekdays, for 12 hours per day. Sandy Springs has committed to providing data about the usage to GEFA on a semiannual basis, for the next three years.
