Sandy Springs awarded grants

The Byrne JAG Grant Program, a program run by the U.S. Department of Justice, has awarded two grants to Sandy Springs.

The grants are for more than $20,000, and will go to the police department to help it improve its services to citizens.

The first grant is for $14,307, and will be used by the Sandy Springs Police Department (SSPD) to buy seven speed-detection devices. The second grant is for $9,893.49, and will be used to purchase new bulletproof Vests, and replace those that are worn out. In total, the city is expected to buy approximately 20 vests.

The grant program goes to support many different components within the criminal justice system, including domestic violence programs, corrections, courts, crime prevention, multi-jurisdictional task forces, justice information sharing measures, and treatment programs.

This is the fifth time Sandy Springs has won an award from the Justice Bureau. The bureau determines who is to receive a grant and how much by applying a formula based equally on a location's crime statistics and its population.

Sandy Springs has been awarded a total of $92,818.68 through the Justice Bureau program since 2006. The City Council met on September 15, and voted to accept both grants.

City officials might like to work with a flyer printing company on a mailer for residents announcing the awards, and how they will be used to make the community safer.
