The Sandy Springs Planning Commission met on July 16 to consider a rezoning plan that included a mixed-use project and new headquarters for Mercedes-Benz USA. It was approved, but in modified form.
The original request was to rezone the area on Glenridge Drive from residential to ‘mix’, in order to be able to develop office space, commercial space, multi-family residences, and single family homes. The initial proposal also was for permission to build 399 housing units.
The commission approved the rezoning, but slashed the number of permissible units from 399 to 199. However, it did give Mercedes-Benz permission to build its headquarters.
The decrease in permitted housing was the commission's acknowledgment of protests from current residents who objected to the density of the housing and the traffic congestion that could occur as a result. The commission also noted that residents were glad to welcome the Mercedes headquarters, but it was the housing plan that they were less keen on.
The proposed project will site Mercedes-Benz USA on the south side of Glenridge Drive, in a wooded area. Developer Ashton Woods will build the housing, retail, and commercial spaces next to the new Mercedes facility.
The developer might consider working with a flyer printing company in order to create a mailer for concerned residents, explaining the plan in detail, and how it will impact the area.
