Local students to benefit from new supplies

Sandy Springs students in the third, fourth, and fifth grades are receiving new reference Books, courtesy of the local Rotary Club.

The club buys and distributes hundreds of thesauruses, vocabulary builders, and dictionaries to students in public schools.

Books have already been given to High Point and Woodland elementary schools. Dictionaries were given to third graders, vocabulary buildings went to fourth graders, and thesauruses were given to fifth graders. After they handed out the books, Rotary members told students how to use them. Spalding Drive Elementary students received their books on November 18.

Rotary International focuses on literacy, and says estimates are that between 60 and 70 million children worldwide have no access to learning. In addition, more than 775 million people aged 15 and over are illiterate. The organization hopes to enable communities to support literacy efforts for people of all ages.

Sandy Springs’s Rotary Club is 44 years old, and has a history of service to both Sandy Springs and communities throughout the world. Professionals, along with community and business leaders who are interested in the work of the organization, are invited to attend one of its luncheon meetings, which are normally held Mondays at the Hilton Perimeter Suites in Sandy Springs.

Rotary officials might consider working with a printing company to create Holiday Cards for the students, thereby encouraging them in their studies.
