The chief of the Sandy Springs Fire Rescue Department, Keith Sanders, wants to buy five new vehicles to increase the department’s fleet. Newer vehicles are lighter and smaller than the ones currently in use, and should save the city money.
The vehicles, which the department would buy from Pierce Manufacturing in Appleton, Wisconsin, would cost $4.46m, which would be prepaid. Once a vehicle is ordered, it takes 13 months for Pierce to build and deliver the equipment. This is the case with a fire engine which Sandy Springs bought last year, and which will be delivered next month.
During a meeting of the city council, Chief Sanders pointed out the need for upgrades. In one incident, the local department required all the city’s equipment, plus five more fire engines: one each from Atlanta, Roswell, and Alpharetta, and two from the county. Adding the new engine and the additional ambulances Sanders want will enhance the coverage the department can provide, both for fire coverage and medical responses.
Sanders added that the equipment purchase will help lower the department’s Insurance Service Office rating to 1, which is the best score given by the ISO. Currently, the department is rated at 2. In addition, the new equipment will resolve some current maintenance issues.
