Juneteenth and Veterans Day get floating holiday
Officials in Sandy Springs have voted in favor of adding a single paid holiday to the 2023 calendar in honor of both Veteran’s Day and Juneteenth.
Juneteenth is a holiday commemorating the emancipation of African American slaves that is recognized by the federal government and is usually celebrated on June 19. Veteran’s Day, meanwhile, is celebrated in honor of the lives lost during while serving in the armed forces. Veteran’s Day used to be a paid holiday on a set date and staff in Sandy Springs were given time off, but that has not been the case for several years before now. Printing services could be used to print new calendars to reflect changes like these.
The council decided that both Juneteenth and Veteran’s Day would be marked as a single floating holiday. According to Jennifer Emery, the Human Resources Director, the city only had 10 scheduled holidays on the official calendar and was considering recognizing two others. She also said:
One of the options was adding a floating holiday to the calendar. A floating holiday is given to the staff on the first day of the year and it can be used on any day before December 31st. The second option was to leave the calendar as it was with only 10 holidays. The council was informed that each holiday will cost the city $210,000 in overtime pay.

“As you’ll notice both options include working with the community to create an annual Juneteenth event celebration. How that would look would come from the input from the community.”
