Developer picked to rebuild interchange near Sandy Springs

A group has been chosen to rebuild the Georgia 400/I-285 interchange, which will involve a part of the highway in Sandy Springs.

North Perimeter Contractors won the contract, which calls on the developer to design, construct, and partially pay for the project, which will improve conditions in one of the most congested interchanges in the metro Atlanta area.

North Perimeter Contractors is not one company, but a group comprised of lead contractor Ferrovial Agroman US Corp. and lead designers Neel-Schaffer, Inc. and The Louis Berger Group. The North Perimeter group was one of four shortlisted for the job.

The job, formally titled the ‘I-285/S.R. 400 Reconstruction Project’, will reconstruct the interchange. It also calls for improvements to be made along I-285, running 4.3 miles from west of Roswell Road in Sandy Springs to a spot east of Ashford-Dunwoody Road, which is in DeKalb County. Contractors will also make improvements along S.R. 400 from the Spaulding Drive overpass to the Glenridge Connector, spanning a distance of 6.2 miles.

Among the improvements scheduled are new collector-distributor lanes, new flyover ramps, and other measures that sound make travel easier east-to-west on I-285, and north-to-south on S.R. 400. The PATH 400 trail system will also be extended.

City officials might consider creating Brochures about the project and Mailing them to residents. They could provide a timeline for the construction, projected road closures, and suggested detours around the work.
