Dance scheduled for Sandy Springs

A celebration of New Orleans-style food and music is coming to Sandy Springs, when Johnny Ace and Sidewalk Zydeco come to the area for the first time.

In addition to zydeco music, the group, which is based in Charleston, South Carolina, plays traditional Cajun music as well as ‘Swamp Pop’ (Cajun swing music).

Zydeco comes from people of mixed European, Native American, Afro-Caribbean, and African descent, known as ‘Black Creoles’. Centered in southwest Louisiana, this society is traditionally French-speaking, rural, and Cajun influenced. Zydeco is derived from the shared Creole/Cajun music known as ‘La-La’, and borrows from blues and other styles as well. The music is fast-paced, syncopated, and lively, encouraging people to get up and dance. To help people do just that, a free lesson for beginners is offered at the event, and it is not necessary to have a partner.

Also adding to the fun is Fusions Catering, who will be providing authentic Creole and Cajun foods for sale.

The fun starts at 7:00 pm on September 10, at the Dorthy Benson Center in Sandy Springs. The dance is scheduled for 8:00 pm until 11:00 pm, with the dance lesson from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Sponsoring the event is the Atlanta Cajun Zydeco Association, which invites everyone to “laissez les bons temps rouler” (let the good times roll).
