Sandy Springs has been working closely with the Atlanta-Fulton County Emergency Management to update the Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan used by the county.
The plan has been approved by the city council in Sandy Springs. It has also been approved by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and can be implemented in cities located in Fulton County. Details of plans such as these are often set out in letters with the city council’s letterhead on them.
Hazard mitigation is a combination of efforts and preventative measures put in place to minimize the effects of a natural disaster. When cities make plans for hazard mitigation, they identify all risk factors relevant to a certain area and make sure that there are long-term strategies in place to protect people and property from hazardous events in the future.
The procedure for creating these plans dictates that they are developed at the county level and then implemented in cities within the county. When potential dangers have been identified, the necessary measures are put in the plan. Federal funding will only be available to counties in the case of disaster if these plans were already developed and approved by FEMA.
The city does not necessarily have to implement the hazard mitigation steps outlined in the plan, but it does have to have a plan in place if it wishes to apply for a mitigation grant.
