Council approves letter of intent for trail design

On Tuesday, February 16, the Sandy Springs City Council took the first step toward extending a trail into the city from Buckhead.

At its meeting, the council gave its approval to a letter of intent, executed with the Path Foundation and Livable Buckhead, that would extend a multi-use trail, currently in the design stage, into Sandy Springs.

The Path400 would go from Loridans Drive to the interchange of S.R.400/I-285. Under the provisions of the letter of intent, Sandy Springs city staff members would join in the process of designing the trail with the other two organizations. Livable Buckhead would be the project manager on the design, while Sandy Springs would handle procurement, as well as ongoing coordination of the management of the project.

The original trail plan was adopted in 2014, and included a recommendation that a multiuse trail be constructed adjacent to S.R. 400, within the extant right of way that belongs to the Georgia Department of Transportation. The trail will be suitable for both pedestrians and bicyclists, and will be more than five miles in length. Funding for the project comes from a federal grant of $496,000, plus another $124,000 from Livable Buckhead, resulting in a design budget totaling $620,000.

City officials might consider creating Brochures, complete with artists' renderings of what the finished project will look like, and distributing them to residents to encourage them to use the trail.
