Roundabouts are under construction at the intersection of Riverside Drive and Interstate 285 in Sandy Springs, according to an item in the Sandy Springs Patch.
The Georgia Department of Transportation recently released an artist's rendering of what the finished roundabouts will look like. The design-build team from the Georgia DOT, which is comprised of the Baldwin Paving Company, Inc., and Infrastructure Consulting & Engineering, has been moving utilities since early this year. The major construction work should begin this summer.
GDOT's project manager, Marlow Clowers, said so far the construction is on schedule, and should be finished by November, if the weather cooperates. She also revealed that Sandy Springs has given funds for decorative lighting and landscaping for the project.
The current configuration consists of one lane in both directions with traffic signals at the end of the ramps. The new design converts the signalized intersections into roundabouts, each one a single lane wide. In addition, the approaches to the roundabouts will be widened into two lanes, one to enter the roundabout, and the other to turn right.
Construction will continue night and day, but lanes will only be closed on weeknights between 9 pm and 5 am, and on weekends from 8 pm to 10 am.
