Although Craig Newton had no opposition in the mayoral race for Norcross, he will be the first African-American to lead one of the 16 cities in the county.
He will also be sworn in by the first African-American to be appointed to the highest court in the state, Georgia Supreme Court Justice Robert Benham.
Newton has many plans for the city. First, he is looking to both protect the downtown district of Norcross while also increasing its quality of life and economic viability. He feels that it is an economic generator for the city.
More technology and high-wage jobs in Norcross are also part of his plan, as well as new technology that can help to ensure the safety of residents in the city. New software has already been purchased by Norcross that takes police data and uses an algorithm to predict where officers need to go to prevent further crime, and it has already been very successful.
Newton, who has been on the City Council since 2006, was praised over the summer by Gwinnett Municipal Association Managing Director Randy Meacham. Meacham said Newton had all the experience in the city to be mayor and has served the city in various capacities.
Cities such as Norcross might consider using mailers or Flyers to inform residents of the city of some of the revitalization plans for the city’s future.
