What's Happening in Atlanta, GA…

Students make UNICEF donations through their own physical activity

In Atlanta, hundreds and hundreds of students have helped UNICEF fight hunger by earning points towards donations.

The students are taking part of a new program called ‘Kid Power’ which is sponsored by UNICEF. The program was created when UNICEF determined that one in four children globally were fighting hunger, while the same number in the U.S. were not getting enough activity.

The way the program works is that students wear a band, much like FitBit, that is called Kid Power. As they move around throughout the day, the band counts their steps. For every 2,400 steps a student takes, they earn a point. For every 10 points, UNICEF will send a food package out to a needy country.

One fifth grader says that he has started doing flips and playing more games with his friends to help accelerate their points. During one week in March, one fifth grade classroom had walked over 800 miles, earning 97 food packets.

The program is free to students, supported by local donors, and about a dozen Atlanta area schools are currently participating. The bands are available for anyone to purchase from Target and $10 towards each band will be donated to United States UNICEF.

Other metro area businesses may want to partner with their local school districts to kick off similar programs funded by donations from area businesses and residents. Businesses could team with print companies to obtain direct mail printing materials to send out to local schools to provide information on their support of the program.
