Motorists take a second glance at large freight carrier
Drivers traveling down Interstate 20 in Atlanta, Georgia may have had the opportunity recently to catch a glimpse of possibly one of the largest trucks and trailers ever to hit the highways.
While we have all seen tractor trailers sporting their “wide load” banners, this one is certainly one for the records. The truck and its trailer hauled a machine press, bound for Alabama, which weighs in at 328 tons. The press will be used to make car parts.
Traffic was slowed or stopped along the trucks route to enable it to maneuver safely over the roads. The truck travelled through two counties along its route, and no doubt contingency plans were in place to cover any hurdles along the way.
Those involved in this huge project have worked closely with the Georgia Department of Transport (GDOT) to ensure that permits were in place and that the truck and trailer would be able make all the turns along the way. The vehicle and trailer are 261 feet long, 19 feet wide, and have 134 wheels.
They also needed to make sure that the roads could handle the weight of the vehicle and make it over bridges and under power lines. The vehicle traveled during the evening hours when traffic was light. Even seasoned truck drivers admired the size of the vehicle and its freight, actually stating that it turned their heads and peaked their curiosity.
