Winter Park organization to combat invasive species

The Natural Resources & Sustainability Department will host an event in Winter Park at the Mead Botanical Garden.

The Invasive Species Removal at Mead Botanical Garden is an event where members of the community can help protect the ecosystem at the attraction by removing invasive plants. Volunteers will protect the environment from ecological damage by getting rid of the species that have been out-competing native plant life. The group will meet at the Azalea Lodge during the start of the event. All participants must wear appropriate shoes and clothing for the activity.

The Natural Resources & Sustainability Department is an organization created by the City of Winter Park in 2021. The group is made up of the Lakes Division and Sustainability Division. The Lakes Division of the organization manages the city’s lakes and waterways and is responsible for tasks such as monitoring water quality and controlling aquatic weeds. The Sustainability Division deals with things like local agriculture, park maintenance, and recycling. This division also promotes events like composting classes and duck box projects.

The plant removal event will be held on Saturday, November 18th from 9:00am to 11:00am. Registration for the program is free. Those at the activity will receive snacks, water, and the necessary materials for combatting invasive plants. Departments in charge of similar gatherings may use flyer printing to share their projects with their communities.
