Winter Park implements lightning warning system
An updated Thor Guard system has been implemented in two locations in the city of Winter Park to enhance the safety of the community.
The design of Thor Guard is to predict strikes of lightning in an area as it measures the static electricity in an area. As such Thor Guard can predict lightning strikes before they take place. When it does predict a lightning strike, Thor Guard blasts a horn for 15 seconds to let residents know to suspend all activities outdoors. There will also be a strobe light flashing and will stay flashing until the return of safe conditions. During the period of the horn and strobe light, people should find a safe and appropriate structure for shelter.
The sounding of the Thor Guard Larm means that all parks in the city will be closed. After the strobe light stops flashing and there are three, five-second blasts of the horn, parks will reopen, and activities will resume.
Local print shops can help spread the word about such new systems and their benefits with flyers and other printed materials.
The Thor Guard system will be in Martin Luther King Jr. and Ward Parks and will cover the entire city. In addition, residents and visitors to the city can monitor the system and receive notifications on a mobile device or computer.
The Thor Guard system will be activated from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. seven days a week.
