George Porter Jr. was born in New Orleans and grew up listening to music. By the time he was in his teens, Porter was playing in jam sessions and began to play bass guitar after being inspired by Benjamin ‘Poppi’ Francis, who gave the young man a few lessons.
When still a teenager, Porter sat in with Earl King and caught the attention of Art Neville, who asked him to join a band he was forming. That was the start of the group that eventually became known as The Meters, who toured the United States in the early 1970s. In 1975, they toured with the Rolling Stones and were the opening act on the tour.
In addition to The Meters, Porter is a founding member of Runnin' Pardners, as well as Foundation of Funk, and the George Porter Trio. He a successful career that has now lasted over 40 years. A review of Porter in concert says:
“That was what I needed for my soul. Thank you all.”
Porter says he isn't quite sure what is going to happen at the concert, he and his band mates are just going to jam and see what happens. Musical events like this often rely on flyer printing for advertising.
The George Porter Trio will be performing at Dexter's New Standard in Winter Park on November 13 at 9.00pm.
