Orlando location honors baseball legends

Tinker Field History Plaza has opened following a ribbon-cutting ceremony, while the work and fundraising continue.

On Wednesday, May 2, the first guests visited the long-awaited baseball memorial. The location offers fans a place to pay tribute to their sports heroes. Other plans to include a memorial to commemorate a visit by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1962 continue as well.

The plaza that sits next to Camping World Stadium began construction in February following the demolition of Tinker Field. The city sold seats from Tinker Field as part of the fundraising campaign for the new memorial. Refurbished seats from the site will be part of a tribute installed in the History Plaza to help commemorate the popular field.

The city began its ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:30 am and welcomed people into the memorial site. Fans and family members of the baseball legends were present during the event. A timeline and individual plaques dedicated to the sports stars are the highlights of the plaza. Brick pavers with the names of donors make up a part of the floor of the Tinker Field History Plaza. The city of Orlando continues to sell the bricks for $200 to $500 to raise funds to pay for the completion of the plaza and future upkeep.

Individuals who would like to buy a brick for themselves or to honor a loved one may contact Michele Brennan at michele.brennan@cityoforlando.net for more information. Businesses interested in sponsoring the plaza or giving bricks as Corporate Gifts can also contact the city for more information. Online donations are also accepted.
