A ribbon cutting ceremony was recently held for opening of the newly renovated Florida Citrus Bowl in downtown Orlando. The project began in January, took nearly 10 months to complete, and cost $207m.
At the ceremony were Buddy Dyer, mayor of Orlando; Teresa Jacobs, mayor of Orange County; and several city commissioners. Dyer commented that this stadium belongs to Central Florida as a place where new memories and experiences can begin.
Approximately 90% of the stadium was renovated by the HNTB Corporation. More seats were added with extra leg space, bringing its capacity to 75,000 people. The renovation work employed 300 people, many from homeless and low-income communities. Rick Strawn, a lead architect from HTNB, commented that he hopes the public is astonished yet pleased with the transformation.
It is believed by city officials that the new and improved stadium will attract big name concerts, college football games that need a neutral location, and even NFL match-ups during the preseason.
The first event to be held there will be the 2016 Kickoff Classic game between Ole Miss and Florida State University. Jacobs expects a sellout crowd for FSU fans and has challenged Mayor Dyer for a sellout on the side of Ole Miss.
