The city council of New Port Richey has approved a change to the land development code that will those who live in manufactured homes to be elevated at least one foot above the base elevation for floods.
News of such changes can be made known throughout a city with flyer printing and other printing services.
Debbie Manns, city manager of New Port Richey, said that there is no increase in flooding in the city but that this is more of a proactive measure to prevent hardships in the future for such residents.
The city has been working with residents to prepare for the worst possible weather conditions. Members of the council have been trying to improve the rating of the city under the Community Rating System from the National Flood Insurance Program of FEMA. As the rating improves, the discounts offered to residents on policies can be increased. The city has a classification of seven which translates to a discount of 15 percent.
Bertell Butler IV, a member of the council, said that this is important. He added that members have been working late and on the weekends so that the rating can be lowered to five, which would mean a discount of 25 percent.
Manns said that this change would apply to replacements and new installations of homes.
