The award, which is given to ten cities annually throughout America, is designed to highlight growth, diversity, and civic engagement. The awards have been issued since 1949, and the Civic League touts the prestige and development boost that they provide. Miramar was highlighted for the economic development initiatives it has undertaken since 2015, including the Business, Inclusion and Diversity (BID) program to help minority-led businesses grow their skills and connections with the business community. Initiatives like this prioritize getting Business Cards in the right hands and making business networking more accessible.
The Civic League’s citation also highlighted the Miramar Cultural Center’s efforts to maintain an artistic community during the pandemic through various online services and the work being done to revitalize Historic Miramar with community gardens, early childhood programs, and senior centers. The League presented these programs as an adept response to the city’s rapid growth:
“For two decades, Miramar has experienced astronomical growth, resulting in both benefits and growing pains. [...] Through resident collaboration, Miramar has proven itself to be resilient in its response to these challenges."
The 2021 All-American City awards were held virtually between June 7 and 9. Other winners include El Paso, Texas; Fort Wayne, Indiana; and Wheat Ridge, Colorado.
