Miramar to host freestyle reunion concert

An upcoming concert in Miramar will act as a mini-festival for stars of freestyle music from the 80s, including a long-awaited reunion of the group TKA.

The headline act will see the original members of TKA reunite for the first time in 34 years. The group was originally composed of Tony Ortiz, Louis “Kayel” Sharpe and Ralph “Aby” Cruz, with “TKA” representing their initials but “Aby” left the group in the late 80s. The group was responsible for Latin hits like “One Way Love”, “You Are The One” and “Don’t Be Afraid.” Other artists playing at the concert will include Coro, Noel, Sweet Sensation, Judy Torres, and Giggles featuring Charlie Rock.

The reunion concert was originally set to take place a day earlier, but was moved to a larger outdoor venue to accommodate a bigger audience. Popular among the Latin-American community and emerging in New York and Miami in the 80s, freestyle is a form of electronic dance music that contains elements of Latin pop and disco. Concerts and festivals bringing together big names from past decades or niche musical genres, often advertised by retro-styled poster printing and local media outlets, have become a hot ticket in recent years and offered opportunities for veteran artists.

The 80s Freestyle Reunion Concert will take place on the evening of May 22 at the Miramar Regional Park Amphitheater.
