The Seminole County Regional Chamber of Commerce presents Habitat 101 on the 3rd Thursday of each month; this is a free 'lunch and learn' program. The next Habitat 101 meeting will take place on January 19 from 12-1 pm at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Casselberry.
Habitat 101 describes what Habitat for Humanity is all about; what they do and how to get involved is this worthwhile organization. Those in attendance will also receive a tour of the ReStore. Habitat ReStores sell donated items to the public and all proceeds go to the organization; Seminole county has three.
Habitat for Humanity “seeks to build and renovate safe, decent and affordable houses in partnership with very low- to moderate-income residents.” It is not a handout, those who quality to receive the houses must put 300 hours of work into the home To qualify, applicants must have a verifiable income and currently be living in substandard or expensive housing. To date, Habitat for Humanity has built 130 houses in Seminole County.
Habitat for Humanity is very involved in the communities they serve. For example, every October they present the Habitat for Humanity Longwood Haunt which features haunted houses, graveyards, a haunted hayride and lots of goodies. Local printing companies are called to provide many of the decorations no doubt.
Habitat for Humanity has been in existence since the 1970s and has built many houses in the United States and Canada. One of the organizations strongest supporters is former President Jimmy Carter.
