The Lakeland Public Library will give a presentation in September on how to use Findagrave.com in genealogy research.
Cemetery Research with Find a Grave is an educational program where guests will learn about Findagrave.com and how to best utilize the site when looking up information about deceased individuals. The lesson is organized by Rebecca Whalon, who is also responsible for genealogy events like Preserving Your Family Photos. Those who come to the program will even discover how they can make contributions to the website to help with genealogical records.
Findagrave.com is a website and community-run resource that preserves the memories of those who have passed by letting people upload photos and write biographies about the deceased. The organization can be used to look up the burial information of a person’s ancestors, and users may even send flowers to the grave site through Findagrave.com. The website was created by Jim Tipton in 1995 and was first used as a place for documenting the graves of celebrities.
Venues that host similar genealogy courses to this can use flyer printing to promote their events.
The presentation will be on Sunday, September 27th from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm in the Lakeland History Room. Registration for the course will open on Sunday, September 20th. There is no cost to attend the event, though library patrons must register for the program in advance. The class is open to teens and adults.
