A program which has been set up for veterans may soon be launched in High Springs.
Launched two years ago, the program is part of IRISHWATERDOGS (IWD), a non-profit branch which aims to pay homage to veterans for their loyal service to the U.S. Those veterans who have been injured find the service particularly beneficial, not only for the help with physical injuries but also with PTSD. IWD has a presence in a number of Florida cities, including St Augustine, Fernandina Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and Tampa.
Dave McDaid set up the non-profit branch of IWD to welcome and thank all veterans and first responders. McDaid met with the Mayor of High Springs, Sue Weller, as well as Edwin Booth, the City Manager, to discuss how the IWD Warriors program could be integrated into the city.
Outdoor activities take place on the first Sunday in each month, with family members and children invited to join them. All activities are free of charge and include nature walks, sailing, kayaking, kayak fishing, outdoor photography, and shore fishing. Around four hours is spent on the chosen activity, with all necessary equipment provided by the charity. The first event in High Springs is planned for March 3 and the team checked out a route which is suitable for all participants.
The program can help veterans who are homeless or out of work to get their life back on track. Veterans are most likely to discover the program through the VA, although local promotion using flyer printing is perhaps a more effective method.
