Washington workshop series planned for bonsai beginners

When people think of a bonsai planting, they often think of miniature trees, but a Washington area workshop will show how other plants can be grown using these same techniques.

A series of five classes will make up the Bonsai Basics course offered by the U.S. National Arboretum. The first installment will take place in early May, where the learners will be working with chrysanthemums.

The participants will use their plants to practice a variety of techniques such as training, pruning, and wiring. The learning will be offered both in the classroom and the garden, and the series is for those age 12 and up.

Chrysanthemums grow rapidly, so students are likely to see results much more quickly than if they were working with a tree. The final results will be grouped together for a class display.

Many of the materials will be provided, but attendees will need to supply their own pruning scissors, box, and fertilizer. They will also need an outdoor growing space that gets at least six hours of sun a day. A brochure printing company can prepare materials lists, instruction sheets, and Booklets of care tips for any horticultural activity.

The U.S. National Arboretum in Washington will be offering this introduction to the art of bonsai on Sunday, May 4. More information, including the full schedule of dates, can be found on its Eventbrite listing.
