Washington walk to introduce pollinator-friendly plants

When it comes to plants, pollinators prefer some species more than others, and a Washington area walk will introduce a selection of these.

Master Naturalist and Master Gardener Kathy Sykes has many years of experience in both entomology and horticulture, and she will be sharing her knowledge with those who register for the Earth Day Family gardening activity this spring. It will provide an easy introduction to the plants along the Connecticut Avenue corridor, and those who are interested are asked to reserve at least two hours for the session.

During the walk, participants will learn how they can choose plants that maximize the number of pollinators they attract. These include bees, hummingbirds, butterflies, moths, and beetles, and the tips can be applied whether a garden is large or just a container on a balcony or doorstep. Everyone is advised to wear comfortable walking shoes, and water and sunscreen are also recommended. Kids aged 8 and up are welcome, and the ticket fee for each family is $35 each.

A walk or other guided outing can provide a fun way to learn about a particular topic. The attendees may benefit from having handouts supplied to them, which can be prepared by area Stationery printers.

This chance to learn how to make a garden especially attractive to pollinators will begin at 5015 Connecticut Avenue NW at 10:00 am on April 20. Its registration system is now open.
