Washington area venue to offer bon-chi crafting class

Hot peppers have been cultivated by indigenous people in the Americas for many years, and a Washington area class will show how these plants can be used to create a special indoor edible display.

Along with tomatoes, tobacco, potatoes, and eggplants, peppers are plants in the Solanaceae (nightshade) family, and they can be easy to grow when given proper care. These plants can be used to create a “bonsai” style planting, and with some luck, they will even produce peppers to harvest and use in the kitchen.

The workshop will introduce some of the basics of growing bonsai, and they can be applied to an assortment of trees including both deciduous and evergreen species. The group will learn about the history of this style of horticulture, and also how to control pests and choose a suitable growing medium. Anyone who has a bonsai is welcome to bring it along with them, and there will be some available for purchase on site as well.

A workshop or class gives members of the public a chance to learn a new skill. Handouts as well as flyer printing services for an occasion will be available at area Stationery printers.

This learning opportunity planned with the home horticulturist in mind is scheduled for November 20. The venue for the afternoon can be found at 15710 Layhill Road in Silver Springs.
