Waterbury to have states first fully electric bus fleet

As per a recent announcement from Governor Lamont, the Connecticut Department of Transportation will receive a federal grant earmarked for the purchase of 10 battery-powered buses.

Lamont said that $7.4m in grant money will be sent to the state’s transportation department from the Federal Transit Administration to obtain 10 each of DC fast chargers and battery electric buses. The CT transit Waterbury division is slated to benefit from these purchases, which will make the bus depot here the first in Connecticut equipped to run a bus transit fleet that is 100% battery operated.

In his announcement, Governor Lamont noted:

“Not only does the purchase of these ten new electric buses mean that we can make the Waterbury fleet fully electric, but it brings us one step closer to our state’s goal of a fully electric bus fleet statewide by 2035.”

It is common for municipalities like Waterbury to note their sustainability efforts, such as promoting “green” energy, in the materials they send to their brochure printing services.

The state of Connecticut will add $5.7m to the grant given to it by the federal government, and that plus money from other sources will provide a total of $13.1m that will provide a good start on making all the transit buses and paratransit vans in the fleet electric.
