A new scholarship, Waterbury Promise, has been established by Waterbury and its Board of Education to help breakdown financial barriers holding back some local youth with higher education goals.
Under the Waterbury Promise Program, 2022 graduates from Waterbury could receive a yearly $1,250 to help fund their post-graduate education at a Connecticut University. The scholarship will increase each year for future classes. By 2025, Waterbury Promise will be providing each approved student with $5,000 per year of college.
With the help of brochure printing services, chambers of commerce promote the benefits of living, working, and attending school in their communities.
In addition to Waterbury Public School graduates, those from Waterbury who graduate from W.F. Kaynor Technical High School and Holy Cross High School will also be eligible. School and city officials see this as an opportunity to narrow gaps for marginalized communities, such as first-generation homes.
Criteria to receive a Waterbury Promise scholarship include attendance at one of the three eligible schools for all four years of high school, having a 3.0 or higher high school grade point average and cumulative attendance of 90%or more. Other requirements are an FAFSA application submission by the student and acceptance from a two- or four-year accredited Connecticut college or university.
A last-dollar scholarship, Waterbury Promise funds are applied only to those expenses that remain after the application of financial aid, individual grants, and other scholarships.
