Municipal Stadium in Waterbury will be getting a freestanding bathroom and locker room facility after these amenities were removed from a reconstruction project of the premier sports complex in the city.
Mayor Neil M. O’Leary has formed a new committee to plan the installation of these amenities in a separate building so as to be able to cater to the national tournaments which the city is hoping to attract.
Paul Pernerewski Jr., the President of the Board of Aldermen and a member of the Municipal Stadium Building Committee, said that people feel that going forward, something is needed to house offices for the coaches, training rooms, permanent restrooms, and potentially some space for offices and the parks department in order to meet the anticipated usage of the stadium.
On the new committee are Steven Giacomi, Board of Alderman Minority Leader; Jeffrey Berger, State Representative; and Joseph Begnal, Former Alderman. Berger said he will look for additional funding from the state for the building and added that community development block grant funding may also be used to cover some of the expense. The Mayor has said that the building will be as simple as possible to keep it affordable.
