Waterbury orchestra partners with student musicians

A group of string musicians who play bass, cello, viola, and violin will be paired with professional players from the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra in a ‘Side by Side’ concert that will result in 45 musicians in a string orchestra.

This concert is the last one in a series of collaborations between the After School Arts Program (ASAP) of Washington, Connecticut and the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra. The program consists of 13 weekly sessions held by three artists from the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra. There is both group and individual instruction, and the focus is on technique, ensemble-playing skills, and intonation.

Music Director of the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra, Leif Bjaland, commented that this is the eighth year that the orchestra has partnered with ASAP. She noted the dedication of the students, and the valuable experience it gives them to sit close to and share music with a professional musician who provides support, coaching, and encouragement.

The concert will feature ‘Plink, Plank, Plunk’ by Leroy Anderson, Tchaikovsky’s ‘Waltz from Serenade for Strings’, and ‘Hoe-Down’ from Aaron Copland’s Rodeo. It will take place in the Auditorium at Nonnewag High School in Woodbury at 7:00 pm this evening, April 6.

The Waterbury Symphony Orchestra and ASAP might consider collaborating on creating Flyers that can be distributed throughout the participating communities to inform residents and parents of the concert, and encourage their support and attendance.
