Waterbury museum holds community day for the public

During the month of January, children, families and adults can take advantage of the many public events at the Mattatuck Museum, located on the green in Waterbury.

The second Sunday of every month always features a new family art activity, tour, and theme. This month, there will be selections from the permanent collection, interactive displays exploring the history of the region, and the Button Gallery with over 10,000 buttons from all over the world.

During the afternoon at 1:00 pm, there will be a tour with a museum educator who will enable attendees to participate in a special studio art activity, based on the exhibition of the art of Robert Cottingham. In addition, Cottingham, will be joined by artists Ann Mallory and Mindy Horn at 2:00 pm for a talk.

Cottingham will discuss his exhibit of objects that are found in engineering textbooks and are the components that make up industrial machines and his art. Horn and Mallory focus on ceramic art, with their work varying in size from pieces that are delicately small to ones more daunting in size. They will talk about their work, which is also currently on exhibit at the Museum.

This Community Free Day of the Museum will be on Sunday, January 8 from noon until 5:00 pm. The Museum might benefit from the use of Flyers to promote this monthly event.
