Waterbury college secures internship grant

Connecticut Community Foundation has awarded the Naugatuck Valley Community College (NVCC) Hospitality Program a $20,000 grant for a work study program for internships in assisted living facilities. This program will begin in spring.

This grant will help students explore careers in assisted living by gaining valuable work experience. It will expand the hospitality program to develop an internship program that serves the elderly in Connecticut assisted living centers.

The president and CEO of Connecticut Community Foundation says the grant was funded by the East Hill Wood Fund, established in 2009. She says they are excited to partner with the Waterbury-based NVCC to build this new program.

The program will have a paid internship for 20 students over two semesters. The program will be coordinated by Karen Rotella, NVCC hospitality coordinator. She says that she expects the program to give students experience and insight into the fast-growing senior assisted living segment in the hospitality industry.

The work study program will show students that this industry has opportunities to work for major companies, make a living wage, and receive medical benefits.

Some of the types of jobs in this industry are marketing director, activity director, head chef, cooks, managers, concierge, and sales. Print shops design promotional Pens for programs like this.

NVCC offers a two-year degree in Hospitality Management with a Food Service Management option.
