Walmart bans plastic and paper bags in Connecticut

Walmart stores located all over Connecticut have banned paper and plastic Bags in order to reduce waste and promote sustainability.

The policy change came into effect on January 18 and was met with mixed reactions. The company would like customers to make use of containers, Boxes, and reusable Bags instead of single-use backs.

Retailers traditional give away Bags with their items, often carrying their Logo Design, but the State of Connecticut passed a law that banned plastic Bags, and this became active in 2021. Before that, shoppers in Walmart stores in cities such as Waterbury had to pay 10 cents for plastic Bags when they shopped. Other states, such as California, Hawaii, Oregon, Delaware, and Maine, have already passed laws banning plastic Bags.

This policy change is part of a program started by Walmart called Beyond the Bag. A statement on the program from company executives read:

“With funding from Walmart, Target, and CVS Health, this three-year initiative is led by Closed Loop Partners with the goal of identifying, testing, and implementing viable design solutions and models that more sustainably serve the purpose of the current retail bag.”

Managers at the stores say that they understand that new policy may be unfamiliar to customers at first, but they believe that in time they will be able to adapt to the requirements.
