Distance learning will be the theme for the Waterbury public summer school program this year. Darren Schwartz, chief academic officer of Waterbury schools, says they are designing an exciting program to engage students.

The schools have plans to group elementary students with similar learning needs district wide. Instruction will be in smaller groups focused on subjects with which children need help, and matched to the most appropriate teacher.

A virtual summer school in Waterbury will use fewer administrators and support staff. The city is using money saved through the administration to fund this program.

The district wants to serve about 1,250 to 1,300 students and about 900 students are from elementary schools. They plan to offer even fine art and physical education exercises online to all students. These universal classes are designed to keep students engaged.

Student in grades K-5 will access online lessons using Google classroom. There will be small groups and instruction using video conferencing. Classes will have six or less students per teacher. The classes will be for elementary, middle and high school students.

High school summer school lessons will focus on helping students catch up on earning credits for courses for graduation. The district will be arranging summer school by calling families in late June.
