Walsh Construction has been selected by the Connecticut Department of Transportation to renovate and repair the interchange at I-84 and Route 9 in Waterbury.
Due to the complexity of the system and the 10 separate bridges that make up this project, the interchange is known as the Mixmaster.
The interchange is a double-decker and has right- and left-hand exit and entrance ramps that span over the Naugatuck River and streets in the city. It is estimated that the interchange carries 150,000 vehicles a day, which is three times the number for which it was designed and built 50 years ago.
The project, which will cost close to $153m, will include repairs to the substructure, steel, and decks as well as general repair to bridge drainage, parapet modifications, and news Signs. Work on the project will begin later this month and is expected to be completed by the middle of 2022.
Between 5,000 and 11,000 new jobs in construction will result from the undertaking of this project. Once completed, it is expected that the new interchange will improve transportation efficiency in the area and help it to be more economically competitive.
Flyer printing companies can be used for projects such as this to offer more information to travelers through the region, and make them aware of any temporary bypasses that might be needed during construction.
