Waterbury’s public schools will reopen this year using a hybrid teaching model of in-person classes and remote education. It will consist of four hours of classroom learning in September followed by distance learning.
Waterbury school superintendent Dr. Ruffin said that if the model goes well, the schools will go to a full day of in-person classes by October.
The first two weeks of school will have staggered schedules. Parents can choose distance learning only, but must commit to this through the fall. Dr. Ruffin says distance learning will be face-to-face online instruction with a teacher at a regular time.
This year, additional custodial help will be hired to help with social distancing. The schools believe 40% of students will opt for in-person learning, and the other 60% will choose virtual learning. About 80% of Waterbury teachers will return for in-person teaching.
Each school will have a nurse and special room for any student that has COVID-19 symptoms.
Over the summer Waterbury has continued to design a distance learning program for all students. Print shops design Promotional Products for programs like this.
The decision to use this model is based on talking with parents, teachers, and the CT Department of Education. Parents should contact their school to choose the type of learning program they want as soon as possible, with the first day of school being September 8.
