Non-profit provides Waterbury kids with free books

First graders across Waterbury were recently provided with a free book, Jabari Jumps, to take home and keep by the non-profit Read to Grow.

Jabari Jumps is about over coming one’s fears and conquering the challenges encountered in life. In the book, Jabari is afraid to jump off a diving board, but recalls his swimming lessons and is able to overcome his fear.

According to Read to Grow’s Suzannah Holsenbeck, the number of Books in a home directly correlates with the outcome of a child’s education achievement level. The higher the number of Books the better. She went on to say:

“In working with the district, we learned that they were concerned about the younger grades in terms of their time in school, ability to learn how to read, it’s so critical those early years.”

Holsenbeck explained the mission of Read to Grow as the promotion of literacy and language skills in children.

An interest in reading sends many school age children to the library, which also offers a wealth of informative literature supplied to them by brochure printing services.

Money for the Waterbury Books was supplied by the Connecticut Community Foundation. Over a thousand Books were given out here in Waterbury this school year, but in the last two decades, Read to Grow has distributed over two million Books to youngsters and families across Connecticut.
