New special exhibits scheduled at museum

Waterbury residents are in for a treat as the Mattatuck Museum will soon open a couple of new special exhibits.

One of the new exhibits features the work of Janet Maya, whose work encompasses sexuality, gender, and social tension. The other, titled “Focus on the Makers,” explores 19th-Century Naugatuck Valley regional hand-sewn objects made for both utilitarian and decorative reasons. Additionally, another exhibit, “Norman Rockwell: Behind the Camera,” will be on display through January 16.

Museum memberships can be given as a novel example of Corporate Gifts.

The Norman Rockwell exhibit contains over 70 items of America’s most-beloved illustrator that offer insight into how he created his unique “Rockwell moments” that are so identifiable with American culture. The Stockbridge, Massachusetts Norman Rockwell Museum organized the exhibit in collaboration with Ron Schick, guest curator.

This Sunday, December 5, a Winter Exhibition Celebration will take place from 12:00 to 4:00 pm at which time Director Bob Burns of the Mattatuck Museum will offer remarks. During the celebration, snacks, meals, treats, and coffee will be available to purchase at the Art of Yum Café and families will be able to take part in Exploration Activities in the Studio.

The Janet Maya and the Focus on the Makers exhibits can be viewed December 5 through February 28, 2022. Attending the Winter Exhibitions Celebration is $5 for members of the public, or free for museum members and youngsters under five. Guests can pre-register at the museum’s website or call 203-753-0381 x130.
