New chief to lead Waterbury police department

Acting Chief Fernando Spagnolo of the Waterbury Police Department has recently been appointed by Mayor Neil M. O’Leary to be the department’s new police chief. He replaces Vernon Riddick Jr., who left in April to become the police chief in West Hartford.

Spagnolo started his career in the police force as an officer in Lisbon, Maine and then joined the Waterbury police department in 1992. He started in the motorcycle unit, was promoted to detective in 1998, to sergeant in 2003, and lieutenant in 2007, and then became an aide to O’Leary who was chief of police at the time.

The new incumbent commented that that he is grateful for the faith and confidence the mayor has in him. The mayor added that he is excited about Spagnolo accepting the position, as he is well respected by the law enforcement community, as well as by residents of the city.

O’Leary said Spagnolo has an “aggressive” policing style when necessary, such as towards violent crime, but he will also be able to develop partnerships with federal agencies and the state police.

Spagnolo will officially be sworn in this Thursday, December 13. Print shops can be hired to create various kinds of printed materials to distribute throughout the community so residents are aware of major appointments and what they mean for the area.
