Food center to come to Waterbury

Waterbury will soon be the home to a major food hub, thanks to funding that was secured by State Representatives Geraldo Reyes, Larry Butler, and Jeff Berger, and Senator Joan Hartley.

To be called the Brass City Harvest Regional Food Hub, the hub will be located on South Main Street in Waterbury and have space for food processing and production and also serve as a retail food market and distribution center. The State Bond Commission approved $1.7m to build the hub, which is expected to create 24 permanent jobs.

Representative Berger commented that this will be a center for the production of food and will focus on healthy food items. It will meet the requirements of the federal government for the distribution of food to a large region. He and his colleagues worked hard to make this facility, something that Waterbury does not have, happen.

Representative Reyes added that many residents have issues with transportation and are unable to get to places to buy the fresh food items that this hub will have available. Governor Malloy commented that this hub will provide local, fresh produce not only for people living in the area, but will also serve various retailers.

Those involved in the creation of the hub might want to create Flyers with more information about the hub that can be distributed to retailers and residents in the area.
