School shopping made easier with sales tax free week

Middletown families will find shopping a little more straighforward with a sales tax break on qualified back-to-school purchases for a limited time.

Connecticut is once again holding its back-to-school tax-free holiday. This week, parents and students will be spared paying sales taxes on qualifying school-related items. The state's sales tax holiday began in 2001, and 15 other states are holding similar events at various times this fall.

According to the Connecticut Department of Revenue, the criteria for items to be included in its Fall 2015 Sales Tax Holiday are that individual items of clothing or pairs of shoes can cost no more than $100. There is no limit to how many items qualify, so long as no single item is over the cost limit. In the case of sales items, whether an item qualifies for tax exempt status is dependent on its reduced price.

How much saving families enjoy as a result of the sales tax holiday will vary, but the National Retail Association puts the average expenditures per child K-12 at $630, and for college students it is even higher at $899. Not only will families benefit, but the local stores, as well as the Print companies that supply them with advertisements, will likely see a boost in sales as well.

Connecticut’s Fall 2015 Sales Tax Holiday began today and ends at midnight next Saturday, August 22.
