The percentage of Middletown high school students who graduate came in a little behind the overall state average, but certain subgroup graduation rates were higher than the state average, according to state Department of Education study. In 2010, 79.4 percent of Middletown High students received their diplomas in four years, compared to the state average of 81.2 percent.
Middletown ranked well above the statewide average, 11.5 percent compared to six percent, for those who remained enrolled in high school even though they didn’t graduate on time. Only nine percent of Middletown high students had dropped out of school in 2010 compared to 12 percent statewide.
Middletown also outperformed the rest of the state when it came to graduation rates of minority populations and student from low-income families. Statewide, 66 percent of African-American and Hispanic students graduated on time. In Middletown, 79 percent of blacks, 70.4 percent of Hispanics, and 70.9 percent of poor students earned their diplomas in four years.
The states’s new graduation monitoring system keeps track of students individually as well as by various groups including race, economic status and special needs throughout their high school years.
Education department official believe the new graduation tracking method is more accurate because it shows how many students completed high school within four years. The old system relied on state compiled data that used a combination of annual dropout data and graduation rates reported by individual districts.
