Class size concerns eased with six-figure boost

The Middletown Board of Education, responding to calls of parents, voted to request an extra $200,000 to hire additional teachers. The last-minute teacher shopping came about after the PTA at Moody School got the ball rolling with a petition drive.

The petition was drawn up when Carolyn May, president of the Moody PTA and other parents, learned that the administration was preparing to lower the number of first grade classes from three to two.

In an article on NBC Connecticut’s website, May pointed out the importance of children getting one-on-one attention from teachers. The thrust of the petition was to drive home the parents' belief that a class containing 15 children instead of 23 or 24 could a have profound effect on the standard of education a child receives.

May expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the school board meeting, although challenges could yet include the $200,000 that the school returned to the city no longer being available, as well as finding the teachers to hire at such a late date.

In any event, the petition was successful in influencing the Middletown Board of Education. When groups seek to bind together to achieve a cause, brochure printing services can provide a convenient and effective means of informing a community and gathering support for an initiative such as this petition.
