Theater holds February fundraiser

In mid-February, many Fairfield classical music lovers will get the opportunity to enjoy an evening of Mendelssohn and double bass, as The Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra will present its annual fundraiser with VIRTUOSIC.

Double bass virtuoso Edgar Meyer, a five-time grammy winner, will be the guest performer.

Part of the orchestra (strings, timpani, two horns, two bassoons, two clarinets, two oboes, and two flutes) will begin the evening with Felix Mendelssohn’s The Hebrides Overture Op. 26, also known as Fingal’s Cave.

Meyer will then play his Concerto No. 1 for Double Bass, accompanied by the smaller orchestra ensemble. With the strings as accompaniment, he will then play his arrangement of Concerto No. 2 for Double Bass in B Minor by Giovanni Bottesini.

The small orchestral ensemble will then play Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3, known as the “Scottish.”

Taking lessons from his father and subsequently from Stuart Sankey, Meyer has played the bass since he was five years old. In 1994, he received the Avery Fisher Career Grant, and became the only bassist to get the Avery Fisher Prize in 2000.

The fundraiser will take place before the concert, and many patrons usually bring Business Cards with them to events such as this to fit in a networking opportunity.

VIRTUOSIC will take place Saturday, February 10 from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm at the Ridgefield Playhouse, 80 E. Ridge Street.
